A Day at the Beach with My Niece!

Despite the fact that it was the end of June, I have not yet been able to swim even though I had been to Budva (Montenegro) just three weeks earlier. In truth this whole couple of months has been quite intense and overwhelming with work and weekends were mostly dedicated to getting more work done at the office.

This last Friday I finished sending almost all of the 640 invitations that needed to be sent out for a major event that the institution I work for is preparing at the end of the month. Knowing that that was taken care of, I could finally give myself the time to relax and take off for the weekend. Which is what I did today (Saturday)!

Mind you, I had not planned on doing anything but just laying around the house watching movies and then spend the evening out with friends. But the morning turned out to be even more interesting.

As has become a regular pattern for my sleep, my eyes opened at about 7:30, but I stayed in bed almost till 9 am. Meanwhile, my mom had been working on getting my breakfast ready. It was definitively delicious.

It was her idea to go and spend the day at the beach, to which I wasn’t very keen at first. Then she also suggested we take our niece with us, as her parents would both be busy with work and study. Well, I truly did not want to resist that. And I am so happy I did!

Myself, mom and dad got our things ready and headed over to my brother’s in law house to pick up my little niece of three years old. She was so exited about the idea that when we called ahead to get ready to pick up, she had been bugging her parents the whole time about why I wasn’t there already.

Needless to say, she was so happy to see all of us when we pulled up to their house and got out to get her stuff. From there we started our journey toward the big sea and the sandy beaches. Upon arrival, all my niece was waiting for was to get her clothes of and run towards the sea to play.

My parents and myself took turns to watch on her and when it was my turn the whole experience was just great. We started building what was supposed to be a castle, and then a mountain of some sort. Then the splashing with water and sand began and oh boy…she was running and playing all around with me.

We got dirty from throwing sand at each other, but the whole thing was so much fun. And all the people around us could see was this little 3 year old girl having fun with her child-crazy uncle of just over 27 year old! Wow, the joy of playing in the sand. Only a child can help you discover that again for when we get older we tend to forget the simple joys of life.
